About

Somiya Nagem

I’m an Iraqi photographer with a creative background, blending academic training and a passion for storytelling. For over a decade, I’ve been capturing moments and narratives that reflect connections, cultural heritage, tradition, and representation through my lens.

At the heart of my work is a dedication to sharing the stories of the Arab community, free from the biases and Westernized perspectives that often shape corrupt mainstream narratives. Art has the power to amplify the voices of the marginalized and challenge stereotypes, and I want to use it to shed light on the rich diversity of Arabs, as well as minority and indigenous communities whose traditions and stories are too often overlooked or misrepresented. I believe in the importance of elevating diverse voices, and my work seeks to reflect the strength, resilience, and beauty of cultures.

My work has been exhibited internationally, including in Japan and the U.S., where it has been recognized for its thoughtful exploration of identity, culture, and the Arab experience. These exhibitions have allowed me to share my vision on a global stage, connecting with diverse audiences and contributing to the broader conversation about cultural representation.
